SRINAGAR, JANUARY 15 (KD): Cabinet Minister Sakina Itoo on Thursday said that the proposed Law University can be established anywhere in Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that its benefits will extend to students across all regions of the Union Territory.
Speaking to reporters, Itoo said the National Conference (NC) government believes in providing equal opportunities to children from Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh.
“For the NC government, children of all regions are equal. The Law University can be established anywhere—whether in Baramulla, Anantnag, or Budgam—but its beneficiaries will be students from across Jammu and Kashmir,” she said.
Responding to protests by some groups in Jammu demanding that the university be set up exclusively there, the minister said certain elements were trying to create divisions within the Union Territory.
“People are free to raise their demands. They can even demand two universities—one in Kashmir and another in Jammu,” she added.
The remarks come days after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah questioned why similar protests were not witnessed when premier institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Management were established in Jammu and not in Kashmir.(KD)
